Paramore’s Hayley Williams: It’s us against the world, like The Goonies

‘It was the worst day of my life,’ says Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams of the day, almost three years ago, her ex-bandmate and ex-boyfriend, Josh Farro, wrote a blog denouncing his old group as a ‘manufactured product of a major label’ in which the members were treated ‘as less important than Hayley’.

Farro, the guitarist, and his brother Zac, the drummer, had recently left the group. Williams issued a statement wishing them success before Farro posted his thoughts.

‘It sucked – not only was a lot of what he wrote untrue but I couldn’t go online and say that,’ says Williams. ‘I’d look like a 14-year-old writing bullet points rebutting everything he said – it would have been immature and ridiculous for us to put the people who follow our band through that. We had to swallow our pride. A lot of people will believe that stuff but the people who like our music will still come to the shows. It took a lot of restraint and a lot of faith.’

To add to the strain, the split came after achieving their greatest success – their third album, 2009’s Brand New Eyes, reached No.1 in Britain.

What followed was some soul-searching between Williams, 24, and the remaining members, guitarist Taylor York and bass player Jeremy Davis, over what to do next.

‘There were days I’d wake up and think, “this is pointless”,’ she says. ‘There were times I thought I’d have to get another job. I’d written all the songs with Josh, I’d hardly written with anyone else, it was definitely scary.’

Hours of drinking tea in York’s kitchen ensued. ‘It took three weeks of talking and venting,’ says Williams. ‘He felt a lot of pressure straight away. I said: “We’ve written a bit together before in the past, kind of, barely, and we can do this, it’s fine, let’s go for it…’”

The resulting collection of songs, their self-titled fourth album, reached No.1 in Britain and the US in April and spawned top 20 single Still Into You – a mainstream pop number with a video that sees the trio monkeying around on bikes. It’s a bit of a departure from their usual pop-punk sound. How’s it gone down with the fans?

‘We knew we’d have to convince some people but it’s been a very positive experience for us,’ she says. ‘No one knows how to categorise us anyway. We’ve always been too rock for pop and too pop for rock. We didn’t set out to be a punk or pop band, we’re just Paramore. We have a lot of different sides to us. To cut it short, when it comes to what category we’re in, I really couldn’t possibly care any less.’

She says if you want to understand Paramore, you need to see one of their shows. I went to their iTunes gig and was still a bit perplexed. They’re perceived as an ‘alternative’ act: Hayley does some headbanging and ska-esque dancing; there are rockier numbers such as single Now, next to out-and-out pop stuff such as Still Into You and Ain’t It Fun.

Then, for all the talk that Paramore are a band, Hayley does a mini solo-set on her keyboard halfway through. Unintentional or not, it seems like a big two fingers up to their old band mates, who probably worried more about questions of ‘authenticity’ than the remaining line-up.

‘Way too much has been written about me being the singer, me being the girl, and when I give my opinion about anything some people are like: “Whoa, Hayley is the dictator of Paramore,”’ she says. ‘It’s not like that at all – we hold each other up, everyone brings their own thing and that’s what makes us Paramore.’

Growing up in Mississippi, Hayley always dreamed of being in a band. ‘I learned to play the drums when I was eight and would try to get my friends to be the singer or learn the guitar. I had plans to make tapes and send them to record companies. I don’t know where it came from because I was listening to ’N Sync and Hanson at the time,’ she laughs.

Coming from a small town was also a motivation. ‘At some point you have to wake up and see what’s outside that bubble,’ she says. ‘When I go back home, the people I grew up with are having kids and getting married – it’s sometimes hard for me to go back because it’s still the same world and I’ve grown accustomed to seeing different places and new things. If I’d stayed in a small town my whole life I’d have gone crazy.’

As she got older, her family moved to Franklin, 20 miles from Nashville, where she discovered the joys of punk. ‘My mom got a bit worried. She was like: “No, you can’t have your hair like Brody from The Distillers, you can’t have a Mohawk…” But she let me go to gigs.’

Williams started singing in bands at 13 and, after doing a stint in a covers band singing Stevie Wonder songs, soon joined Paramore.

‘When we first set out it was just to play shows – it was a very simple goal,’ she laughs, looking back on their successful, if turbulent 11 years together. ‘Just to play songs for people who like them. There’s still that feeling today, of us together against the world, like The Goonies.

‘Even though we’re older now, when we’re hanging out together – we were just walking around Paris in our black hoodies – it’s such a wonderful feeling. It’s like: “Yeah, we did it, we totally conquered.”’

Paramore - Escape Route Lyrics

10:10 AM Blogger Serabutan 0 Comments

[Japanese Bonus Track:]

I've got a life out there somewhere, it's waiting
Lined with palm trees and only new faces
If I could look past the present and get there
Well baby it's worth the shot

Just enough time to plan an escape route
I put my map on the wall in the basement
Not quite a victory to run from your problems
But it's the only plan that I got
It's the only plan that I got

And if you try to find me now (oh, oh-oh, oh)
I'm in all the echoes that have faded out
So, I'm moving on 'cause I just want to feel for once that I belong
And that's what's going on, that's what's going on

Cross the state line and called out a warning
Not too long, now I'll breathe California
Paid my dues and I'll try to be loyal
But now I'm done with all that

Where I'm going is everyone's story
We want you left, we're left to start over
It's not a question of who are we really
It's who we wanna be

And if you try to find me now (oh, oh-oh, oh)
I'm in all the echoes that have faded out
So, I'm moving on 'cause I just want to feel for once that I belong
And that’s what's going on

All that's in between, a brand new life and I this time
But time has not been kind
It's not been kind to me, it’s winding backwards
Time has not been kind, it’s crawling by so slowly!

And if you try to find me now (oh, oh-oh, oh)
I'm in all the echoes that have faded out
So, I'm moving on 'cause I just want to feel for once that I belong
And that's what's going on

And if you try to find me now (oh, oh-oh, oh)
I'm in all the echoes that have faded out
So, I'm moving on 'cause I just want to feel for once that I belong
And that's what's going on

Paramore - Native Tongue Lyrics

[Japanese Bonus Track:]

How can they say there is one way when it's the opposite?
And how can they know the end of the story before I tell it?
'Cause when I walk your feet they fall to the same beat
Or maybe we're from two different worlds, but we got our own language

We talk to people but they never understand
They think we're crazy 'cause it sounds like laws

We're speaking in our native
Speaking in our native tongue
We're speaking in our native
Speaking in our native tongue

We used to live like we were strangers we didn’t know any better
We didn’t fit in with the outer crowd so we gave in and we shut our mouths
But oh how I love your history and I can take it
And when you talk in code to me I can translate it

We talk to people but they never understand
They think we're crazy 'cause it sounds like laws with them
Ain't it strange all the things you hear when you sit and listen?

We're speaking in our native
Speaking in our native tongue
We're speaking in our native
Speaking in our native tongue

And all this time I've been wasting my breath
Just wasting my woes on everyone else

Now they're speaking in my native
Speaking in my native tongue

So come on, talk it out (2x)
So come on, and talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk it out
Your voice have brought me back me from the dead
So come on, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk it out, out, out, out

Speaking in my native
Speaking in my native tongue
We're speaking in our native
Speaking in our native tongue

You know I'm speaking the whole day
I've been wasting my breath
Just wasting my woes on everyone else

Speaking in my native
Speaking in my native tongue

(Verse)
I’m writin the future, I’m writin it out loud
We don’t talk about the past
We don’t talk about the past, no
So I’m writin the future, I’m leavin a key
Something we’ll always be missing
You won’t always feel emptier

(Verse)
Just think of the future and think of your dreams
You’ll get away from here, you’ll get away eventually
So think of the future, think of a new life
And don’t get lost in the memories
Keep your eyes on the new prize

Paramore - Be Alone Lyrics

10:07 AM Blogger Serabutan 0 Comments

(Verse)
So what if I don’t have a lot to talk about?
I shove my mouth and keep it locked until it comes
And what if I don’t ever want to leave my house?
Stay on the couch while all my friends are going out

(Chorus)
You should be alone
Yea, you should be alone
You should be alone with me
We could be alone
Yea, we could be alone
But never get too low on me

(Verse)
I make the journey down the hall back to my room
But you want time then let it ride inside in silence too
See I ain’t want to climb some social ladder too
Some Shangri-La’s that all the cool kids will abuse

(Chorus)
You should be alone
Yea, you should be alone
You should be alone with me
We could be alone
Yea, we could be alone
But never get too low on me

We could be alone together

Oh oh oh oh oh, Oh oh oh oh oh oh
I’m alone, now I’m in love with you alone
Oh oh oh oh oh, Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Come be alone, I’ll be in love with you alone

Oh oh oh oh oh

(Chorus x2)
You should be alone
Yea, you should be alone
You should be alone with me
We could be alone
Yea, we could be alone
But never get too low on me
